You have in a way, become the voice of a whole lot of us - (people who have the mind but not mind enough or the eloquence to put in words what they think).

Pity at first, soon turned to disgust when I was reading the various reports on the New York Times, Washington Post, Reuters websites and watching CNN and BBC World all weekend.

2 young children were raped at the Superdome, I read somewhere, a man pointing to the dead body of an old lady slumped in a wheelchair, saying that his dog got a better burial than the people here, pictures of people running away with stacks of clothes- labels, bar code tags and hangers intact, the young grabbing relief material dropped by helicopters while the old sat and stared from their wheelchairs made me reel and retch in anger. Police and army alike, treating its own citizens like they were members of a leper colony or vermin- refusing to even go near them.

I believed that lineage and pedigree alone does not make and shape an individual, society and state also has a role to play in shaping his/her character. A refined and genteel society produces refined and gentle citizens. Isn’t that why we say Delhites are crookish, Punekars are intellectuals, Bangaloreans are culturally more evolved, Mumbaikars are industrious...all those notions are now long gone.

I saw greed, anger, pathos, lack of respect for human life, utter disregard and more greed and boy- it stank. New Orleans is after all not in the back of beyond, it is in United States of America – the world’s super power. With Katrina one thing is for sure, America has lost its claim to superiority and power. As far as I am concerned the great American dream has gone under the tide forever - the dream of a society where everyone is free and has a fair and full chance to shape their destinies.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
