I am trying to think of the talking heads that come to mind when news programs need a perspective on Indian affairs. It’s not often; well, let’s say not often enough. Fareed Zakaria, editor of Newsweek International – usually seen on MSNBC’s Hardball with Chris Matthews - offers a great perspective and looks good on TV too! And of course Thomas Friedman of the NYT taking up the cudgels for Indian call centers and outsourcing. And Aishwarya Rai for Bollywood, though seriously that doesn’t count.

The last time Manmohan Singh came to Washington (July 2005), his itinerary was: luncheon with the National Press Club; Wolf Blitzer’s late edition on CNN and a private meeting with the conservative Washington Post editorial board. People who had to take a no were Jim Lehr-PBS, NPR, Fox News, WSJ and NYT. I know Singh probably didn’t have the time but it would have been great to see more of him in the news. He is a great representative for India in the US – intelligent, dignified and very articulate.

Though I can’t help thinking if the stylish and very adorable Rahul Gandhi were to be PM, I am sure we would see a lot more TV coverage in the US!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11594319.post-1127201921731963792005-09-20T13:08:00.000+05:302005-09-20T13:08:00.000+05:30The 'art' of media management??.The way the corpor...The 'art' of media management??.The way the corporate-PR person-journalist chain sometimes works, its more like a puppet-show.Something close to what has been humourously depicted in the movie 'Chicago'.

A puppet-show is an art alright, but mediapersons becoming puppets in the hands of those who know how to stage-manage them does not say much for the profession of journalism.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11594319.post-1127135762013601062005-09-19T18:46:00.000+05:302005-09-19T18:46:00.000+05:30Here in the US, Mushy’s media management seems to ...Here in the US, Mushy’s media management seems to be in shambles. His comments implying Pakistani women scream rape to get visas to the US (!!!) are all over the media -- Many Americans are familiar with the name of Mukhtar Bibi, thanks to Nicholas Kristoff and Oprah Winfrey. Also touching on the subject of India-Pak talks that went bad, the only analogy that comes to my mind is an India-Pak cricket match. One is the wild, all-talk team and the other is more sensible, calm. I am not even sure if we need to respond to Mushy’s comments that all’s well when really, all’s not. But you are right; it would be nice to have better media management. Maybe they could take a page from Indian corporate leaders, what with the ceaseless write-ups in the Economist, Businessweek, WSJ and NYT.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
