My father works in a government scientific lab over time without being paid over time, works on saturdays and holidays. In my parents I see the exception to the stereotype of the laid back Indian government employee.
But i have also seen the others, which has made me wonder why my parents work so hard and I feel in awe of them.
I agree, not everything needs to be privatised.Sriramhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14147413738265909202noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11594319.post-1139241762456379392006-02-06T21:32:00.000+05:302006-02-06T21:32:00.000+05:30You're correct. This move by the government is surely a step in the right direction.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11594319.post-1139232618470065932006-02-06T19:00:00.000+05:302006-02-06T19:00:00.000+05:30The Konkan Railway line starts from Roha, not Than...The Konkan Railway line starts from Roha, not Thane.

For more info look up www.irfca.orgAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11594319.post-1139231170489014152006-02-06T18:36:00.000+05:302006-02-06T18:36:00.000+05:30You are very right Govind. Ha ha ha, just kidding…But I agree with you that privatization is not the answer for everything. You are right about Konkan Railways. I have used it thrice – love that it saves travel time, has good service and it is a pleasant ride thanks to the greenery. Another example that comes to mind is Amul and Dr. Kurien. I guess if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. So maybe it boils down to work ethic, accountability of the management and making full use of the subsidies that has been provided to these public sector units.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11594319.post-1139153919493823682006-02-05T21:08:00.000+05:302006-02-05T21:08:00.000+05:30I just re-read your post and am embarassed to admi...I just re-read your post and am embarassed to admit that I totally mis-understood your views, in particular the Airport bit.

Since theres no way to delete my earlier post, I can only offer my sincere apologies for jumping the gun. Thats not true - Yes, some people will lose their jobs but the company who buys the business is not stupid to sack people who have years of experience and skills(like the 2 KR employees you met) and who are the ones who are actually running their business on the day-to-day level. All they will do is place more importance on efficiency and profitability. So yes, if only 5 Engineers are needed to do a job and there are 11 now, 6 of them will have to be fired - But thats simple Economics, The Govt shud have done it ages ago - and because they havent, you and me are paying the salaries of the others from our tax money.

The Airports - They are worse than some of the stations I have seen. We have let the Govt run them for Donkey years and we know what the result has been - Does it take a rocket scientist to figure out what the natural way forward is? Yes, some people will lose their jobs but loads more will be generated too , if the whole Indian airport experience becomes better , by means of more foreign tourists, more Internationals business people flying in and out and so on.

Yes,Privatisation is not a solution for all but you just used the wrong example to prove it.The Guy Next Doorhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02896534228916398192noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11594319.post-1139095172680838012006-02-05T04:49:00.000+05:302006-02-05T04:49:00.000+05:30i agree with ur basic premise, that all organisati...i agree with ur basic premise, that all organisations should not be privatised, for various, individual reasons. yet, there are some, i believe, which benefit from privatisation. for example, in the phone companies in calcutta? not everywhere do we find the kind of pride and dedication that you have written, so beautifully about. somevplaces there's just a complacency rooted in the lack of competition. however, i still agree with the basic premise that we cant, or should not, privatise everything.Preronahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08873055320080221754noreply@blogger.com
