Govind, maybe you can write a book on China v. India. Hope to meet you soon. When do you return? Drop me an email, if you can.Lubnahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04952407396902290193noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11594319.post-1146887236663037002006-05-06T09:17:00.000+05:302006-05-06T09:17:00.000+05:30Hi Govind,Garment manufacturing is indeed a big op...Hi Govind,

Garment manufacturing is indeed a big opportunity lost for India. I sometimes really wonder whether policy makers have lack of common sense (or an overflow of the same). The reason i say this is that garment manufacturing is one of the few industries which is extremely labour intensive.

For eg. Gokaldas Exports, one of the largest garment exporters in India, sells garments worth Rs.1000 crore per annum. To do this it has to employ around 25,000 pple (i think even this is an underestimate). But, what this means that a garment mfg unit requires around 25 employees to earn a crore rupees. Compare this to Infosys, which earns Rs.8-9000 crore and employs around 35,000 pple, ie. 4-5 people per crore of revenues.

The point that I am trying to make is that creating legislations and removing systemic bottlenecks can reduce this lead time and therefore make India a major garment manufacturers and exporter which in turn will result in massive employement generation (remember every crore of revenue from garment mfg generates 25 jobs).

Our current exports to the US and the EU are around USD 3 bln each (around Rs.13,000 crore). If we can reduce our lead times and increase this number by even 25-30 per cent per annum we are looking at adding 1.6-2 lakh job additions per annum just from garment mfg.

Policy makers please think, atleast make a beginning !!Ravi Purohithttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17616076999283569192noreply@blogger.com
